Protected Areas is a special focus at Legal Atlas. Our goal is to create a comprehensive, geo-referenced database of the laws that define the world's system of areas protected for their natural, ecological, and cultural value.
As they are often regulated by separate legislative frameworks and involve distinct approaches to management, Legal Atlas will maintain a separate focus on terrestrial and marine protected areas. According to the World Database on Protected areas in 2012, 9.7% of the Earth's land surface has been designated as a protected area, while only 2.3% of the earth's coastal waters (extending 0-12 nautical miles from the coast) are similarly protected. |
